I’ll confess: I forgot/didn’t make an effort this year with my kids’ Valentine’s Day cards. I just didn’t have it in me this year. I’m tired. We’ve just emerged from January, a now annual calamity-ridden month of the year, where everyone gets multiple illnesses and there’s always some kind of national crisis.

In general, I’m very pro the Hallmark holiday. My own mother was uncharacteristically motivated around Valentine’s Day, probably because I grew up in Minnesota where you hold on to every shred of joy in the depths of February.

But this year I just forgot. Fine, whatever. It’s just that my 3 year old twins make up one fifth of their ten person classroom, so it will be noticed. I’m already dreading what kind of reprimand will be waiting for me from Oscar when I pick him and his twin sister up later today.

They’re three though! They aren’t the ones making/buying/delivering these cards. I can’t be responsible for SIXTEEN (8 classmates x 2 twins) Valentine’s Day cards!!

I messaged their teacher, hoping she’d assuage my parental guilt because she’s always telling me what a hero I am for raising twins AND a kid with disabilities (I’ll be honest, it’s nice to hear) and she simply responded with this:

The kind of “no worries” that feels like that there might actually be some worries under the surface.

Someday when my kids are writing their OWN Substacks about the trauma of my neglect, I’ll be the first in line to admit the error of my ways.

Okay this week’s delights:
