When I think of places I felt safe, happy, and warm as a child, I always think of my grandparents’ house. We moved around a lot when I was young, first within our hometown Minneapolis, and then eventually overseas when my parents started working for a humanitarian aid organization in Central Asia— another story for another time.

But my grandparents had the same house my entire life, and as a child I just liked existing in it.
